本片又译作《党同伐异》，是D．W．格里菲思最具创作野心的作品。由于受到《国家的诞生》惊人卖座的影响，格里菲思遂再接再励拍摄一部场面更大，内容更有深度的影片。他花了一年半的时间，动用了二百万美元的制作费，拍摄成片长220分的巨片（原版长480分）。该片讲述了由4段相隔数千年互不相关的故事连缀而成 ：《母与法》、《基督受难》、《圣巴托洛缪大屠杀》和《巴比伦的陷落》。故事虽不相关，但反映了一个共同的主题：祈求和平，反对党同伐异。。Dao returns home and finds her fiance in bed with another woman. She shoots them dead on the spot. She is sentenced to 10 years in prison. She gets out eventually and stays with a friend who runs an escort service and learns that women are even caged in the outside world.。
